Jackson receives the SPOTYA trophy
Last year may have been an annus horribilis in many walks of life: the re-emergence of swine flu, the collapse of the Irish economy and the snow-enforced halt to civilisation as we know it. But for a selection of satisfied salespeople, 2010 proved that every cloud can have a silver lining.

The Salesperson of the Year Award 2010 was a typically close run competition, with some very strong candidates across the board. Indeed, our judging panel had the difficult task of choosing a winner from all the worthy candidates, but they did manage to narrow it down to a top three, with Mark Jackson from Commercial, sponsored by Nestle, scooping the top spot. In second place was Neil Forge from Proactive Business Supplies, sponsored by Brother, while Steve Crocker from CTS Sales and Service, sponsored by BlackDog, came third.

The SPOTYA ceremony took place in the heart of London's trendy Camden Town at Gordon Ramsay's York and Albany restaurant. While the Scottish chef is best known for his four-letter outbursts and reducing hardened culinary experts to tears, his minions do produce some incredibly tasty food and the lunch was exceptional. The USP team was joined by winner Mark Jackson, who was accompanied by his nominator, Katrina Webb from Nestle Professional, and everyone present had an excellent afternoon.

In true celebratory style, the wine flowed and the food kept coming. It was certainly a great way to end 2010 and begin the New Year party season in style.

"I am very honoured to win the USP magazine Salesperson of the Year Award and would like to dedicate it to every employee of Commercial Limited, our fantastic supplier base (including most notably Nestle, who kindly nominated me), and my whole client base, especially Claire Ellis and the team at IDH who I was delighted to quote from in my pitch," said Jackson.

"My final thanks go to my family and my daughter, who at the age of only five has already used the award for a show and tell at school. I think she is very proud! Thanks also to the judging panel and all the team at USP for the fantastic magazine and most marvelous lunch."

Crocker, who came third in this year's awards said: "My thanks to USP and my sponsor BlackDog and everyone involved in the SPOTYA competition for recognising my achievements throughout 2010.

"I think that everyone who entered has done well to be noticed and it's always nice to be rewarded for something we love doing. Last year was a very tough year for business so it's fantastic to know there are dealers out there going that extra mile: well done everyone," he added.

The SPOTYA offers a unique opportunity for salespeople in this sector to get some well-deserved recognition for their efforts throughout the year, and USP is always proud to support this worthy cause. We will be running the awards throughout 2011, so keep an eye out for some more inspiring achievements on these pages. Who knows, it could be you that we take out for a boozy awards dinner at the end of the year.

Well Done Mark, we at Commercial are very proud of you!

Our drivers said they were amazed at how much fuel could be saved by changing a few basic ways of driving,' said Simon Graham, environmental strategist for Commercial Group. 'As over 84% of our baseline carbon footprint was from our fleet vehicles, the way that our people drive is very important to our environmental programme. ecolution has had a significant impact on our overall carbon reduction programme, helping to slash our carbon footprint, save us money and provide a better service to our customers. ecolution has helped us achieve a 75% reduction in the carbon footprint of that fleet.

Five easy ways to make your company greener
Tom Bawden

Jason Hawkins, one of Commercial Group's warehouse staff was quoted in the Sunday Times article Five easy ways to make your company greener: “We were unpacking stuff and throwing away the mountains of bubble wrap, shrinkwrap and boxes that it came in - then we were wrapping it back up in new packaging and shipping it out. It seemed a huge waste. So we asked the management if we could look into a way of reusing the packaging and we have been recycling most of it ever since." These days 98% of the packaging used by the company comes from incoming materials. The initiative is part of a broader green drive, which has allowed the company to reduce landfill rubbish from 100 skips a year to eight.

Business savvy with an eco twist

In the words of Guardian journalist Kieran Cooke, "In tough economic times companies might be tempted to put plans to reduce carbon emissions in the pending tray. The priority is keeping the business going. Tinkering around with environmental issues is considered a distraction - and an additional cost. Commercial Group, a Cheltenham-based office supplies company, has confounded such ideas, still held in many areas of business. Through the innovative and careful management of its fleet of vehicles and the monitoring of overall company activities", he said, “Commercial has sharply reduced carbon emissions.”

It’s easy to be cynical about companies’ green claims; after all we’ve been seemingly bombarded with green press releases over the last couple of years, and in the end it becomes difficult to sort out the eco-bling and greenwash from the truly meaningful initiatives. Key to [Commercial's] ambition of doubling in size over the next five years is a sustainable agenda. This strategy will see it reduce its carbon footprint, says director Simone. Now nearing the end of its second year of implementation, it has already achieved a 50 per cent cut in the first year and is on track to realise an 80 per cent reduction by 2010. The targets have been met through radically changing its operation and have been a factor in securing more than 5 million of business over the past two years.

Today with an investment of 40,000 pounds, the company has installed a biodiesel tank on the forecourt of its head office and runs most of its fleet on sustainable biodiesel. The company has since been named GreenFleet Private Sector Fleet of the Year thanks to this revolutionary idea and has also been handed two Energy Saving Trust hero awards. “our fleet was responsible for 84 per cent of our overall emissions” says Mann. “given that statistic, it was imperative for us to rethink out logistics strategy. “to begin with our logistics manager Rob Paddock developed a dynamic routing system that has so far enabled us to eliminated 140,000 miles per year from our van routes. Combined with using sustainable biodiesel, this has enabled us to reduce our audited fleet emissions by half.”
